HOME DIY: Striped Glitter Mug

I made this striped glitter mug back in November when I reviewed Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe Gloss on Craft Test Dummies. I'd seen several glittered mug tutorials using regular Mod Podge, resin, and other adhesives...none which I thought were either easy or durable (except the resin) for the average crafter. I was thinking about Christmas gifts back when I made this sparkly mug, but it would be a great Valentine's day present too. The Mod Podge formula needs to cure for 28 days before the project can popped into the top dishwasher rack. If you're giving it as a gift on Valentine's Day, I suggest including a cute note about that. I used red, because well it's an awesome color, but you could do this in any color and even multiple colors. This is a fairly basic Mod Podge project, so it's good for beginners to advanced users. Ok onto the project!

CRAFT LEVEL: Beginner

COST: About $15-$20, if you don't have all the supplies on hand. As a typical crafter, the only things I didn't have on hand was a $1 mug and the Mod Podge that Plaid Crafts gave me.

TIME: A few hours, but this is mostly drying time. The mug has to cure for 28 days before it's top rack dishwasher safe

SUPPLIES:
  • A plain mug - I got mine from Dollar Tree
  • Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe Gloss
  • Fine glitter
  • Blue painter tape
  • Soft flat paint brushes
  • Thin paper plates - To catch the loose glitter
  • A foam bowl - Pour a little Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe Gloss into the bowl, so you don't contaminate the jar with glitter. You can always add more, but you can't put it back once it's been contaminated with glitter. You'll apply the Mod Podge from the bowl to the mug

INSTRUCTIONS:

1) Using the blue painter tape, mask off a stripe around the top, and two evenly spaced around the middle. If you have a taller or shorter mug (this is a normal size one) you can add more or less stripes. Because of the curve, it was easier to align the bottom of the tape than the top. Work with it the best you can (folding or using multiple pieces) to make the top of the stripe straight. Add some tape around the handle where it meets the mug. Rub the tape well, so the edges are smooth and secure.

2) Flip the mug over, so the bottom is up. This way it won't stick when it's drying. Working one stripe at a time and in small sections, over top of a paper plate, brush on Mod Podge and sprinkle on glitter. Let it dry for an hour. Repeat with another layer of Mod Podge and glitter. Some glitter might flake off when applying the 2nd layer of Mod Podge. That's ok. The 2nd layer should help. If you get any patchy places, repeat with a 3rd layer. Let the mug dry for an hour in between layers.

3) Carefully remove the tape before the last layer dries.

4) After the last layer has dried, use a clean fluffy paint brush to remove any loose glitter from the mug.

5) Carefully apply 3 top coats of Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe Gloss, allowing 1 hour for drying in between each layer.

TIP: If you make any mistakes, you can scrape them of with your fingernail, before it's fully cured.

6) You can likely use the mug and gently hand wash it before the 28 day curing time. You must wait 28 days for the Mod Podge to fully cure before it's ready for the dishwasher.

I chose stripes, but you could do this same technique using basic contact paper stencils (think large heart), angled tape for a geometric design, or any other simple design you can think of. I chose not the glitter the handle, as I thought it would get the most friction from handling...because it's a handle. Keep the top edge free of glitter, so you're not risking drinking glitter when using it. Whatever design you choose, have fun with it. Happy Makery!

DISCLOSURE: Plaid Crafts supplied the Mod Podge for the purpose of making projects and a review. All photos, projects, and writing is my own.
