You also know that I had my kitchen remodeled. More on that later. Heck I haven't even shared having our 2 full bathrooms turned into one mega bathroom...2 years ago. I digress, follow me on Instagram for that instant content. Anywho, I kept some of our old kitchen decor, but several pieces were donated, as they didn't match our new kitchen, which has a retro 50s-60s vibe. If you've ever wondered what my artwork would look like as a colorful room, it's our current kitchen. I really liked this chubby chef wall art, but it was black with odd green dry brushing and the details didn't stand out. Paint is a great way to makeover mass produced art, like this chubby chef, to match any decor.<br />

<b><br /></b>
<b>INSTRUCTIONS:</b><br />
<b>1)</b> I cleaned it with a general cleaner and paper towel, to remove any dirt.<br />
<br />
<b>2)</b> Then, I gave it a couple light coats of flat white spray paint. I've found both the matte and flat white spray paints are great for giving textured items a nice basecoat before hand painting with acrylics.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pRiG-MESNGQ/XLiHbZI6WaI/AAAAAAADfSw/4D3MnjgKnjM6_LRoeNPi6ON7H4QvJ9JwgCLcBGAs/s1600/Colorful%2BChubby%2BChef%2BWall%2BArt%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1412" data-original-width="1212" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pRiG-MESNGQ/XLiHbZI6WaI/AAAAAAADfSw/4D3MnjgKnjM6_LRoeNPi6ON7H4QvJ9JwgCLcBGAs/s640/Colorful%2BChubby%2BChef%2BWall%2BArt%2B1.jpg" width="548" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>3)</b> I used the DecoArt Americana acrylic paints and small paintbrushes to fill in the details.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/--RC9wydm120/XLiJ2wu8_NI/AAAAAAADfS8/c_R1iRfUZ5QjD5kOUUQIBOFvcfdutzpAwCLcBGAs/s1600/Colorful%2BChubby%2BChef%2BWall%2BArt%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1374" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/--RC9wydm120/XLiJ2wu8_NI/AAAAAAADfS8/c_R1iRfUZ5QjD5kOUUQIBOFvcfdutzpAwCLcBGAs/s640/Colorful%2BChubby%2BChef%2BWall%2BArt%2B2.jpg" width="548" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>4)</b> I dry brushed the orange background to bring out the plaster style texture.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6o3Ynleb-Ig/XLiqYPTpHxI/AAAAAAADfk4/56UVss2jSow-CCbtHFMAktTcZnPCyCGwwCLcBGAs/s1600/Colorful%2BChubby%2BChef%2BWall%2BArt%2B5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1204" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6o3Ynleb-Ig/XLiqYPTpHxI/AAAAAAADfk4/56UVss2jSow-CCbtHFMAktTcZnPCyCGwwCLcBGAs/s640/Colorful%2BChubby%2BChef%2BWall%2BArt%2B5.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>5)</b> I used a liner brush and contrasting paint to add details.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pS6YNQSwyVg/XLiqjoJoWbI/AAAAAAADfk8/DSRinfKH0nYBfJk-qfHryhWNjNpTTvpfwCLcBGAs/s1600/Colorful%2BChubby%2BChef%2BWall%2BArt%2B6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="981" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pS6YNQSwyVg/XLiqjoJoWbI/AAAAAAADfk8/DSRinfKH0nYBfJk-qfHryhWNjNpTTvpfwCLcBGAs/s640/Colorful%2BChubby%2BChef%2BWall%2BArt%2B6.jpg" width="392" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>6)</b> For sparkle, I used DecoArt Glamour Dust and Craft Twinkles on different sections.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qOhT3rLlCjU/XLisMfREhpI/AAAAAAADflM/1ij_KHpIDB00Drt4so9EFRykPlzsnonRQCLcBGAs/s1600/Colorful%2BChubby%2BChef%2BWall%2BArt%2B7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1306" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qOhT3rLlCjU/XLisMfREhpI/AAAAAAADflM/1ij_KHpIDB00Drt4so9EFRykPlzsnonRQCLcBGAs/s640/Colorful%2BChubby%2BChef%2BWall%2BArt%2B7.jpg" width="522" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>7) </b>To seal the paint, I used DecoArt Triple Thick Gloss spray. To fill in the spots the spray missed, I used the paint on version.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kZrRmC55p6Y/XLiLiib8xEI/AAAAAAADfTI/A8g0Nrs1OzQlR5_7hpv1sFyKcUvAwztmgCLcBGAs/s1600/Colorful%2BChubby%2BChef%2BWall%2BArt%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1324" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kZrRmC55p6Y/XLiLiib8xEI/AAAAAAADfTI/A8g0Nrs1OzQlR5_7hpv1sFyKcUvAwztmgCLcBGAs/s640/Colorful%2BChubby%2BChef%2BWall%2BArt%2B3.jpg" width="528" /></a></div>
<br />
You can customize this project to fit any color palette or relief object. My chubby chef wall art is made of resin, but wood and matte ceramic would be suitable too. Paint is always a great way to update most objects, especially mass produced artwork. Whatever you're making, have fun with it. The scallops make the perfect clouds. I used <a href="https://decoart.com/americana-decor/outdoor-living/paint">DecoArt Outdoor Living paints</a> to paint this doormat. This paint is made for outdoor spaces. It's water and weather proof. I also like that should this doormat need touching up, I don't have to mix colors. I can just dip my paintbrush into the jar and paint the rug. If your home needs some refreshing outdoors, also check out the <a href="https://decoart.com/americana-decor/curb-appeal/">DecoArt Curb Appeal</a> paint line. Lots of durable colors made for your door and other outdoor decor.<br />

<b><br /></b>
<b>INSTRUCTIONS:</b><br />
<b>1)</b> Shake the paint jars well. Dip your paintbrush right into the jar. Mark out the rainbow lines with the white Outdoor Living paint and a sturdy paintbrush. Later, I adjusted the lines to accommodate 8 colors. Rinse the brush in the cup of water and dry the brush with a paper towel.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ubomjA3XCLE/XLOxsjBpi-I/AAAAAAADfN4/HPs7oMA5O1IX5msHzDd5_2fRPievUmmowCLcBGAs/s1600/rainbow%2Bdoormat%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="763" data-original-width="1600" height="304" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ubomjA3XCLE/XLOxsjBpi-I/AAAAAAADfN4/HPs7oMA5O1IX5msHzDd5_2fRPievUmmowCLcBGAs/s640/rainbow%2Bdoormat%2B3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>2)</b> Fill in the rainbow with each paint color. We found that pouncing the brush and keeping the brush heavily loaded with paint worked out best to get the paint into the doormat texture. Make sure to paint the edges too. Rinse and dry the paintbrush between colors.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4VRH69fAbk8/XLOx6qcyJmI/AAAAAAADfOA/pBhUXo66WFUgrq_H_8PmZigmX3DZKN-eQCLcBGAs/s1600/rainbow%2Bdoormat%2B5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="972" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4VRH69fAbk8/XLOx6qcyJmI/AAAAAAADfOA/pBhUXo66WFUgrq_H_8PmZigmX3DZKN-eQCLcBGAs/s640/rainbow%2Bdoormat%2B5.jpg" width="388" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<b>3)</b> Put the rug outside to dry in a covered area.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mUbAHEbS5wY/XLOkpXo8MeI/AAAAAAADfNo/9I_CxbOqps8O3r_lxiH2EYFNV7Gz7StlACEwYBhgL/s1600/Painted%2BRainbow%2BDoormat%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1121" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mUbAHEbS5wY/XLOkpXo8MeI/AAAAAAADfNo/9I_CxbOqps8O3r_lxiH2EYFNV7Gz7StlACEwYBhgL/s640/Painted%2BRainbow%2BDoormat%2B2.jpg" width="448" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Obviously I love rainbow colors and this rug actually has deeper meaning for our family. Of course rainbows are a symbol of the LGBTQ+ community, of which my daughter and I are part of, and my husband is an ally. I started this blog (which reached 10 years this March!) making gothic anatomy artwork, starting a few years ago, I made rainbow art every June for LGBTQ+ pride month. Then a few years later, I started making more colorful projects and eventually incorporated rainbows into almost every personal project. Colorful work is so cheerful and it's what I'm know for now, but like most artists, my work has a deeper meaning.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Speaking of new work, you should check out my new business This Bohemian Home, which I'M MAKING THINGS TO SELL! I know, haven't done that in a while. It will be a mix of my gothic and anatomy artwork and my colorful cheerful work. Cause like the Gemini I am, I have have a love for the dark and colorful...and if you've seen the baby blanket I made this month, I'll have some dark colorful items. Whatever you're making, have fun with it! Happy Makery!</div>

I was on vacation. with my little family for a week. Now I'm prepping for an upcoming local event, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/304351306944510/">Richmond Moon Market's 2nd Annual Mushroom Mania</a>. I'm vending for my new business <a href="https://www.instagram.com/thisbohemianhome/">This Bohemian Home</a>. I'm also demoing a felt mushroom sewing project for my other business <a href="https://www.facebook.com/rvacraftclique">RVA Craft Clique</a> (local craft classes that I've been teaching for over 2 years). I haven't vended in several years, but I spent most of my youth working for my parents, selling calligraphy at countless craft shows. Teaching crafts is always fun, but this time I'll have craft kits! I know! If you're in the Richmond, VA (RVA) area, come see me and a bunch of other makers, watch a film, and learn about mushrooms, on April 20th at <a href="https://www.facebook.com/championrva/">Champion Brewing Company</a> (in an old bank).<br />

There's a mix of pieces that would be great for late summer through winter, fitting all those weather fluctuation. There's even looks for those tropical getaways in the depths of winter. Whatever the weather, the wearer is sure look look party ready in this collection.<br />

I bought the blank wood rooster from Target. I used <a href="https://decoart.com/americana/">Decoart Americana Acrylic paints</a> to create the feathers. I'd list the colors, but there's a lot and I mixed some colors myself. I used <a href="https://decoart.com/glitter/glamour-dust">DecoArt Glamour Dust Paints</a> (fine glitter paint) in different colors to add sparkly feathers. As you know, I love using as many colors as possible, but you do you.<br />

<b>INSTRUCTIONS:</b><br />
<b>1)</b> I used a <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/567242515549862348/">real rooster photo</a> for reference. I marked out color areas loosely with a pencil.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KuhyZCwrr00/XJUagRoIP9I/AAAAAAADdho/sRWYaEAMoZ4O5gQGr5Bdljey0ERHZRVpgCLcBGAs/s1600/Rainbow%2BRooster%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1434" data-original-width="1600" height="572" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KuhyZCwrr00/XJUagRoIP9I/AAAAAAADdho/sRWYaEAMoZ4O5gQGr5Bdljey0ERHZRVpgCLcBGAs/s640/Rainbow%2BRooster%2B1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>2)</b> I used a small round brush to fill in the areas with the darkest Americana Acrylic Paint shades I picked. I feathered the colors where they met, to make adding feathers easier.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PGiiKxqzn78/XJUcbsbhHnI/AAAAAAADdh0/edqxTvC5Ya8C1_Wb_q-Mbbp4L8LHiWoTwCLcBGAs/s1600/rainbow%2Brooster%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1374" data-original-width="1389" height="632" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PGiiKxqzn78/XJUcbsbhHnI/AAAAAAADdh0/edqxTvC5Ya8C1_Wb_q-Mbbp4L8LHiWoTwCLcBGAs/s640/rainbow%2Brooster%2B2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>3)</b> I worked one color group at a time, going from dark to light with two sizes of small round brushes to add layers of feathers. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-trOym_8Hdxs/XJUexc2sB6I/AAAAAAADdiI/3C9FyBDNluIkU9NqdeLkj9Uj86ErGhOZgCLcBGAs/s1600/rainbow%2Brooster%2B4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1368" data-original-width="1389" height="630" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-trOym_8Hdxs/XJUexc2sB6I/AAAAAAADdiI/3C9FyBDNluIkU9NqdeLkj9Uj86ErGhOZgCLcBGAs/s640/rainbow%2Brooster%2B4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>4)</b> I went back in with a fine paintbrush to define details including the beak, eye, head shape, and claws.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_TBNbzL-VEg/XJUdWTo7TNI/AAAAAAADdh8/cm37mv2Pj7QDna_SJRUVlSvoS8EplgD_wCLcBGAs/s1600/rainbow%2Brooster%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1429" data-original-width="1337" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_TBNbzL-VEg/XJUdWTo7TNI/AAAAAAADdh8/cm37mv2Pj7QDna_SJRUVlSvoS8EplgD_wCLcBGAs/s640/rainbow%2Brooster%2B3.jpg" width="598" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>5)</b> I used different Glamour Dust paint colors to add glitter feathers and details to the rooster.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-idZ6R3Qxa7c/XJUgSQy33OI/AAAAAAADdiU/vBcqAPB67bEoZG8cTmWzxi0bOHiI21JvwCLcBGAs/s1600/rainbow%2Brooster%2B5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1116" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-idZ6R3Qxa7c/XJUgSQy33OI/AAAAAAADdiU/vBcqAPB67bEoZG8cTmWzxi0bOHiI21JvwCLcBGAs/s640/rainbow%2Brooster%2B5.jpg" width="446" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>6)</b> I will seal this rooster with a Triple Thick Gloss Varnish using a flat paintbrush.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ygJRZsAqN7M/XJUjNTiNHZI/AAAAAAADdig/NnWEK5DawD86h2nb_lA24kVcgisTZrgsQCLcBGAs/s1600/rainbow%2Brooster%2B6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1273" data-original-width="1307" height="622" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ygJRZsAqN7M/XJUjNTiNHZI/AAAAAAADdig/NnWEK5DawD86h2nb_lA24kVcgisTZrgsQCLcBGAs/s640/rainbow%2Brooster%2B6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>7)</b> Using a hammer, attach the sawtooth hanger to the rooster back with the two nails.<br />
<br />
<b>8)</b> Hang the rooster on the wall<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xS1yAa4B17Y/XJUknoXCqRI/AAAAAAADdis/pfEem4Hsh7czl7SnW49_y_pTLXISo2mvwCLcBGAs/s1600/rainbow%2Brooster%2B7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="651" data-original-width="650" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xS1yAa4B17Y/XJUknoXCqRI/AAAAAAADdis/pfEem4Hsh7czl7SnW49_y_pTLXISo2mvwCLcBGAs/s640/rainbow%2Brooster%2B7.jpg" width="638" /></a></div>

Thanks to <a href="http://www.amandaevanston.com/">Amanda Evanston</a> for inspiring me to make a "disco chicken". If you haven't seen Amanda's artwork, go check it out. If you live in the Chicago area, you can take one of her painting classes in person, which sometimes includes her disco chicken class. She's launching a brushless florals <a href="https://amandaevanstonartworks.com/collections/online-learning">online class</a> soon, so check out <a href="https://www.instagram.com/amanda_evanston/">her Instagram</a> for more details. I have a fruit and veggie painting and <a href="https://amandaevanstonartworks.com/products/chicken-ornamentshttps://amandaevanstonartworks.com/products/chicken-ornaments">a disco chicken ornament</a> of hers hanging in my kitchen. Of course thanks to DecoArt for providing me with their paints. You could paint your rooster in any coloration you desire, but be honest with yourself, you prefer the rainbow rooster. Whatever you're making, have fun with it! Package theft isn't a huge problem where I live, but it's better to be safe than sorry. This is my 3rd rendition of this sign. The USPS, UPS and DHL delivery people always ring the doorbell, even when the sign wasn't up and I was repainting it. Amazon however, ignores the sign and won't take the extra second to do this. I swear I'm going to put a small sign by where they leave packages and take delivery photos, so they definitely see it. I repainted this sign to be boldly colorful with clear instructions.<br />

<br />
<b>INSTRUCTIONS:</b><br />
<b>1) </b>If you are starting off with an old sign, wipe it clean with a damp rag. If it's extra dirty, use some soap and a scrub brush. Dry off with a clean rag. Allow to dry before moving forward with paint.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vpABQtlIjTE/XIq4ZYKwXII/AAAAAAADdTc/obskcdIOfaoAcgQSYY66Z5XKoU0Cq9mtACLcBGAs/s1600/Delivery%2BRing%2BDoorbell%2BPainted%2BSign%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1441" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vpABQtlIjTE/XIq4ZYKwXII/AAAAAAADdTc/obskcdIOfaoAcgQSYY66Z5XKoU0Cq9mtACLcBGAs/s640/Delivery%2BRing%2BDoorbell%2BPainted%2BSign%2B1.jpg" width="576" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>2)</b> Using Chalky Gesso, prime the front, back and sides of the sign. I used two coats on the front and sides to cover the previous artwork. Let gesso dry between coats. If the surface isn't completely smooth, which is common with wood or old signs, use fine grit sandpaper to smooth out dry surface between coats.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L6D9ABXqO34/XIvrKLaCd1I/AAAAAAADdds/2raOERJTDqU3GA9-i1lT4OAEqIBFbcvRwCLcBGAs/s1600/Delivery%2BRing%2BDoorbell%2BPainted%2BSign%2B2%2B%25281%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1208" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L6D9ABXqO34/XIvrKLaCd1I/AAAAAAADdds/2raOERJTDqU3GA9-i1lT4OAEqIBFbcvRwCLcBGAs/s640/Delivery%2BRing%2BDoorbell%2BPainted%2BSign%2B2%2B%25281%2529.jpg" width="482" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>3)</b> Pour a little Bubblegum Pink, Carousel Pink, Peony Pink, Dragon Fruit, Razzle Berry, and Watermelon Slice onto a paper plate. Using a flat paintbrush, apply these colors to the sign in a patchwork style, overlapping the edges. Let 1st coat dry. Paint 1-2 more coats onto patches that are sheer. The patchwork should be opaque.<br />
<br />
<b>4)</b> Pour a little Pink Chiffon and a drop of Razzle Berry together onto the paper plate. Add a little water and stir to mix the thinned paint color. Using a fan brush, splatter that paint color onto the patchwork layer. Tap the brush to control the splatter. Turn the sign to make sure all areas have some splatters of this color. Repeat the splatters with Cherry Red and Cherry Red with a dot of Red Violet, both thinned down with a little water. Repeat splatters with Celebration Pink and Sizzling Red at full strength.<br />

<br />
<b>5)</b> Using Red Violet and a small paintbrush, carefully paint the edge molding. Let dry. Repeat with a 2nd coat. Paint Berry on top of Red Violet for a metallic sheen. If your sign doesn't have an edge molding piece, you can either skip this step or add a boarder.<br />

<br />
<b>6)</b> You can hand draw your letters 1st in chalk or pencil, but I wrote them out on paper to get the letter count for spacing and painted directly onto the project. With a small liner or round paintbrush, carefully paint your letters using Bluegrass Green, Blue Violet, and Dioxazine Purple. I widened the letters up as I painted, so they showed up well against the busy background. I oriented my letters to the left, leaving plenty of room for the arrow.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JE59wLga0YU/XIv3hlTa6QI/AAAAAAADdeM/LMg9KNWam3sFZj-eDhSfE6iM4CJzqJ5owCLcBGAs/s1600/Delivery%2BRing%2BDoorbell%2BPainted%2BSign%2B11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1197" data-original-width="1600" height="478" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JE59wLga0YU/XIv3hlTa6QI/AAAAAAADdeM/LMg9KNWam3sFZj-eDhSfE6iM4CJzqJ5owCLcBGAs/s640/Delivery%2BRing%2BDoorbell%2BPainted%2BSign%2B11.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>7)</b> Using Primary Yellow and a small round brush, paint a thick arrow after "Ring". Let 1st layer dry. Repeat with 2nd layer and let dry. Using Splendid Gold, go back over the yellow arrow. Let dry. Repeat with 2nd coat for an even opacity. Let dry. Paint 2-3 layers of Gold Craft Twinkles onto the gold arrow. I applied my layers of Gold Craft Twinkles thickly for maximum glitter. Let each layer of glitter dry before adding another, or the arrow will get lumpy. The last layer will take the longest to dry.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qxuIPrjbZwg/XIv6uu737kI/AAAAAAADdeY/CtkJMTPtVSsxnwPWv-RSvLA1SYbVPEdjgCLcBGAs/s1600/Delivery%2BRing%2BDoorbell%2BPainted%2BSign%2B7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="840" data-original-width="1600" height="334" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qxuIPrjbZwg/XIv6uu737kI/AAAAAAADdeY/CtkJMTPtVSsxnwPWv-RSvLA1SYbVPEdjgCLcBGAs/s640/Delivery%2BRing%2BDoorbell%2BPainted%2BSign%2B7.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>8) </b>Using a wide flat paintbrush and DuraClear High Gloss varnish, seal the whole project. This is a thick varnish, so one coat well applied should be enough. I sealed the front and sides, waiting for them to dry, and sealed the back. Once the whole sign is dry, look it over for any non-sealed areas. Go over those areas with varnish too, so the whole sign is sealed.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<b>9)</b> Using the hammer, add the sawtooth hanger to the top center back of the sign with the two nails. I was changing the orientation of the sign, so I had to add new hanging hardwear.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<b>10)</b> Using the hammer and a nail, hang the sign by your doorbell or door.<br />

<br />
This is one of those projects where you can pick whatever color palette you want. I can't paint my house outside, but I can brighten it up with cheerful decor. The nice thing about doing the patchwork and splatter is that the texture disguises any texture remaining from the old letters and images. I can't tell where they were previously. I'm hoping this sign is effective. Our USPS guy likes my bright decor. I wonder what he'll think of this new sign. He always rings the doorbell when he delivers a package, which is what inspired me to make a sign for all deliveries in the 1st place. The UPS guy rings the doorbell too, due to the sign and sometimes helps me bring in big packages like the heavy shelving I bought for the dining room. Whatever you're making, have fun with it! Happy Makery!Abby Davishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04324511684836415313noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5160568048953812541.post-84968226002416364212019-03-13T10:14:00.001-04:002019-03-13T10:14:48.019-04:00FALL WINTER 2019: Ashley Williams<a href="https://ashleywilliamslondon.com/">Ashley Williams</a> showed her <a href="https://www.vogue.com/fashion-shows/fall-2019-ready-to-wear/ashley-williams#collection">Fall Winter 2019 collection</a> in London, England. Her collection is eclectic and a bit choatic, like she threw in a lot of concepts, but the message wasn't visually clear. Still, I picked several favorites that I felt made the collection seem more cohesive. I love a good theme, so I liked the cat patterns, leopard prints, and fur that caught my cat lady eye. I would definitely wear the knitted cat pattern pieces. There were some sperm pieces, so I'm guessing the cat theme is actually a pussy theme. According to the designer, the concept was a mix of sexual and granny, which is what I see. If you take out the sperm pieces, which I did mostly, then the sexual aspect isn't as obvious, which I'm totally ok with. I'm cool with conservative pieces that don't lose their quirk and creativity. This is a small collection, and I only had a few favorites. These are party looks for someone not afraid to play with volume. They appear to be mostly either satin or taffeta, due to the low sheen. Of these looks, I'm fond of the gold bell bottom pants and cropped jacket. I don't see that often. I love vintage inspired clothing that takes the best details of the decade and refines them. This is a nice mix of muted color and neutrals. This collection gets me inspired to mix up colors, textures and patterns for new outfits. Spring is almost here in Virginia, but it's normally fairly chilly until June. I'm feeling the mini skirts, which are a trend that started in the 1960s, and the Annie Hall-esque vests. I want to put on a record from the 70s and get dressed up. Also, wouldn't these looks fit into a Wes Anderson film?<br />

Her <a href="https://www.vogue.com/fashion-shows/fall-2019-ready-to-wear/alexander-mcqueen">Fall Winter 2019 collection</a> is full of dark romance, with the use of draped lines, punk influences, fetish inspiration, and structural ruffles. This isn't for the dainty and sweet, much like Alexander McQueen's designs weren't. The mix of menswear and femininity is always a strong combination in the hands of Sarah Burton, letting androgyny seep into some looks. If I want to see new takes on fashion without losing wearablity, I look to Alexander McQueen. I'll admit that I always love a disco ball fringe dress that screams party. It makes the club kid in me smile as much as the leather dresses. Here are my favorite looks. You can see the full collection over on Vogue.<br />

I used <a href="https://decoart.com/stylin/">DecoArt Stylin'</a>, <a href="https://decoart.com/glitter/glamour-dust">Glamour Dust</a>, and <a href="https://shop.decoart.com/decoart-patent-leather-metallics">Patent Leather</a> paints to give it painted abstract makeover. You might not be able to find this exact round case, but you could use any white canvas pouch or purse. I chose a color palette that reminds me of the water and Spring flowers.<br />

<b><br /></b>
<b>INSTRUCTIONS:</b><br />
<b>1) </b>Unzip the canvas case. Turn it upside down with the top flap laying flat. This makes painting easier. Mix some shades and tones of the Stylin' paint colors to create a range of greens, blues and purples. White lightens colors. Add a little yellow to the green to make a more yellow green. Your colors won't end up exactly the same as mine and that's ok. It's also ok if you use the colors as it or just add a little white and don't get fancy.<br />
<br />
Using a flat paintbrush and the mixed paint colors, paint the canvas with patchwork strokes, staggering the colors and sizes of the shapes. Let this layer dry. Paint a second coat on any patchwork that isn't opaque. Let dry. Rinse the brush between colors. Avoid getting paint on the zipper, or the zipper won't work.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RGWuLLOlOXQ/XIbX9fAqquI/AAAAAAADcmE/EAiaUIoWrJsa_EF6z2fGXRkGKiIQYWoEACLcBGAs/s1600/Abstract%2BPainted%2BRound%2BCase%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1020" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RGWuLLOlOXQ/XIbX9fAqquI/AAAAAAADcmE/EAiaUIoWrJsa_EF6z2fGXRkGKiIQYWoEACLcBGAs/s640/Abstract%2BPainted%2BRound%2BCase%2B2.jpg" width="408" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>2)</b> On the paper plate, add a little water to each paint color to thin the colors for splatter painting. Using a fan paint brush, load it with one thinned paint color. Tap the brush with your fingers, to splatter paint on the canvas case. It's ok if there's some slung lines and drops. If there's some patches without splatter, lightly dab a corner of the fan brush onto the canvas case to make dots. These don't need to be the same size and shape. Rinse the brush between colors.<br />
<br />
Repeat this step with each of the darker colors and at least one light color. Don't let the colors dry between layers, so some drops mix with each other.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WqVUTN49Fvs/XIbbWiQhFZI/AAAAAAADcmM/UxZrEMpSUOISbZ2yo_1K6WnmqbAIFvwvACLcBGAs/s1600/Abstract%2BPainted%2BRound%2BCase%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="844" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WqVUTN49Fvs/XIbbWiQhFZI/AAAAAAADcmM/UxZrEMpSUOISbZ2yo_1K6WnmqbAIFvwvACLcBGAs/s640/Abstract%2BPainted%2BRound%2BCase%2B3.jpg" width="336" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>3)</b> Using the Glamour Dust colors and the flat paintbrush, splotch on glitter randomly on the canvas, overlapping patches with similar shades. This will dry sheer, so don't worry about the tinted glitter color looking to intense while wet. It will look like a more subtle shimmer when dry.<br />

<br />
<b>4)</b> Using a round brush, dot on gold patent leather paint in clusters. This take a couple hours to dry. I didn't put any of the gold on the bottom, only on the sides and top.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I've been experimenting with abstract painting the last few years. You might recall <a href="http://www.craftyladyabby.com/2016/12/home-decor-diy-painted-abstract.html">the lamp shade</a> I painted a few years ago. It's still in my living room and coordinates with my colorful gallery wall. I'm fond of painting on objects more than standard canvases. It's a decades long fascination with wearing and using my artwork. Whatever you're making, have fun with it! It's about being artistic and creating unusual pieces that need to be seen. Japanese designer <a href="https://www.vogue.com/fashion-shows/fall-2019-ready-to-wear/noir-kei-ninomiya#coverage">Noir Kei Ninomiya</a> created that kind of collection. It sculptural and voluminous with constructions that remind me of balloon art mixed with textures and cut outs. Though the main color is black, there are contrasts of pastel pink, cream and purple. Red flowers are featured in every headpiece, adding a romantic fantasy to the collection. These are sensual clothing, not in a sexual sense, but through the choice of fabrics that encourage touching. You can see more of Noir Kei Ninomiya on their <a href="https://www.instagram.com/noirkeininomiya/?hl=en">Instagram</a>. Their work is available for purchase in all <a href="http://www.comme-des-garcons.com/">Commes de Garcons</a> and <a href="https://shop.doverstreetmarket.com/us/">Dover Street Market</a> shops worldwide.<br />

Their <a href="https://www.vogue.com/fashion-shows/fall-2019-ready-to-wear/romance-was-born">Fall Winter 2019 collection </a>features eclectic party ready ensembles. I haven't written about fashion shows in years, as making art and home decor drew my focus more over time. However, I still love fashion. Oddly this collection drew me, because I've been looking for colorful kimono inspired jackets, sculptural pieces, and am tempted to buy sparkly fishnets for the rare occasion that I dress up for a party. Sometimes you just want to feel elegant and dress up in something over the top. This collection reminds me of <a href="https://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/poir/hd_poir.htm">Paul Poiret's</a> designs from the early 20th century mixed with some Mod looks from the 60s and the obvious Japanese inspiration. There's definitely an artsy vibe to all of their designs, as if an artist or art appreciator wanted to wear art. How many more time can I say art? Anywho, here are some favorite pieces from this collection. You can purchase their work in stores and <a href="https://www.romancewasborn.com/">their website</a>.<br />

Fabric paint is an excellent way to makeover any style of shoes. I found these sneakers at Michaels for under $10. Starting with a white background helps make colors bright. DecoArt Stylin' is formulated to not crack or peal, which is what I want in a fabric paint. Unlike other fabric paints, Stylin' goes on smoothly like acrylic craft paint. You might need a couple coats for some colors. Make sure to shake the bottles well for the best opacity.<br />

<li>Cup of water</li>
<li>Paper towels</li>
</ul>
<b>INSTRUCTIONS:</b><br />
<b>1)</b> Remove the laces and set them aside. I painted one shoe at a time. Using fuchsia Stylin' fabric paint and the skinny round paint brush, paint an curvy line all around one shoe, making sure to overlap onto the sneaker tongue (the part of the shoe normally covered by laces. Thicken some curves. This will help shift the line shape and make the overall design more psychedelic. Rinse the brush in the cup of water and dry off with the paper towel before switching colors.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jOugLiuABa4/XIASK99I2BI/AAAAAAADbt4/pZCyQeFnmH0m4-C2P3eWuAPeNZxyw3KyACLcBGAs/s1600/Psychedelic%2BRainbow%2BSneakers%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="832" data-original-width="1600" height="332" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jOugLiuABa4/XIASK99I2BI/AAAAAAADbt4/pZCyQeFnmH0m4-C2P3eWuAPeNZxyw3KyACLcBGAs/s640/Psychedelic%2BRainbow%2BSneakers%2B1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>2)</b> With red fabric paint and the cleaned paint brush, follow the line shape above the pink curvy line. Again thicken some curved sections. These can be opposite or staggered to the previous row of thickening. Repeat with each color, following the rainbow color order (I listed the colors in order), until the sneaker fabric and toe cap is filled in with paint.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SN7h4fa6cuI/XIASx4y0FZI/AAAAAAADbuA/tktH85sPCCoy9WT5KhhU2KmILzMHGrf6gCLcBGAs/s1600/Psychedelic%2BRainbow%2BSneakers%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="850" data-original-width="1600" height="338" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SN7h4fa6cuI/XIASx4y0FZI/AAAAAAADbuA/tktH85sPCCoy9WT5KhhU2KmILzMHGrf6gCLcBGAs/s640/Psychedelic%2BRainbow%2BSneakers%2B2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>3) </b>Repeat the painting process with the 2nd sneaker. The curvy lines of the 2nd sneaker design don't have to match the 1st sneaker, but the rainbow color order must be the same.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ufN35lD1mQY/XIAUuATKYwI/AAAAAAADbuM/Vw_NZlysDXkYhs_LyG0qdlHaIS0NJxYwgCLcBGAs/s1600/Psychedelic%2BRainbow%2BSneakers%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1064" data-original-width="1600" height="424" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ufN35lD1mQY/XIAUuATKYwI/AAAAAAADbuM/Vw_NZlysDXkYhs_LyG0qdlHaIS0NJxYwgCLcBGAs/s640/Psychedelic%2BRainbow%2BSneakers%2B3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>4) </b>Go back over any lines that need touching up or deepening in color, with the matching paint color. Let sneakers fully dry.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cVR-L4PXbUs/XIAWMbIM0TI/AAAAAAADbuY/JtUYaFyZECsgQ2sEN_rJrzFFx9W-N3KHgCLcBGAs/s1600/Psychedelic%2BRainbow%2BSneakers%2B4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1263" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cVR-L4PXbUs/XIAWMbIM0TI/AAAAAAADbuY/JtUYaFyZECsgQ2sEN_rJrzFFx9W-N3KHgCLcBGAs/s640/Psychedelic%2BRainbow%2BSneakers%2B4.jpg" width="504" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>5)</b> Insert the laces back into the sneakers. I chose to use the solid white laces the sneakers came with, but you could swap them out for pre-made rainbow laces or attempt to paint them. I figured the paint might make the laces a little stiff.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tbzHhWetJXs/XIAZhdUaD0I/AAAAAAADbuk/-aPihstDG0gq4Q40PN-TezjpK6eGWAOkACLcBGAs/s1600/Psychedelic%2BRainbow%2BSneakers%2B5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1119" data-original-width="1600" height="446" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tbzHhWetJXs/XIAZhdUaD0I/AAAAAAADbuk/-aPihstDG0gq4Q40PN-TezjpK6eGWAOkACLcBGAs/s640/Psychedelic%2BRainbow%2BSneakers%2B5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
For most projects, I encourage DIYers to adapt the project to fit their own color palette. For this rainbow sneaker project, I wanted to stick with the rainbow order. As for the design, if a different pattern...straight lines, polka dots, splatter, flowers, etc...suits your style better then pick that one. I was thinking of lava lamps and psychedelic swirling art while painting my sneakers. Whatever you're making, have fun with it. It's a new take on traditional gessos, leaving a smooth chalky finish much like their chalk paint line, but for priming canvases and objects before painting. It comes in 6 colors; white, beige, light green, grey, dark grey and black. It comes in 16 and 32 fluid ounce jars. It's available in select stores through MacPherson's. Use their <a href="https://www.macphersonart.com/cgi-bin/maclive/wam_tmpl/store_locator.p?site=MAC&layout=Responsive&page=store_locator">store locator</a> to find a location near you.<br />

DecoArt describes Chalky Gesso as:<br />
<i>A super-smooth matte gesso primer ideal for fine art and decorative painting. It creates a suede-like, non-grainy finish and requires no sanding. <br /></div>
I tested out the white and black on two planters I bought from Michaels, a llama and a Buddha head. Both planters were matte finish, much like a canvas. I painted it on just like paint, with the white needing 2 coats and the black only needing 1 coat (great pigmentation). There are some instructions and tips for using <a href="https://decoart.com/chalky-gesso/">Chalky Gesso</a> on the DecoArt website, including how to use it on metal and glass.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xUWdF3NNDdg/XHgBLrW0rjI/AAAAAAADaQI/NQXY2rOonfg6ypvGEHOi6OTajmSRVSoyQCLcBGAs/s1600/decoart%2Bchalky%2Bgesso%2Breview%2B3%2B%25281%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="945" data-original-width="1600" height="378" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xUWdF3NNDdg/XHgBLrW0rjI/AAAAAAADaQI/NQXY2rOonfg6ypvGEHOi6OTajmSRVSoyQCLcBGAs/s640/decoart%2Bchalky%2Bgesso%2Breview%2B3%2B%25281%2529.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
For the llama, I used white Chalky Gesso to prime the surface and cover the pre-exisiting design. I used a variety of brightly colored Americana Acrylic paints to create a fleece-like patchwork design. For a bit of sparkle, I used Glamour Dust Glitter paint sparsely around the llama. For the face details, I used purple <a href="https://decoart.com/metallics/dazzling-metallics">Dazzling Metallics</a> and <a href="https://decoart.com/americana/acrylics">Americana Acrylics</a>. I used <a href="https://shop.decoart.com/duraclear-varnishes">DuraClear Gloss Varnish</a> to protect the painted design. This planter came with a glossy glazed inside, so it actually is suitable for real plants. Though I love nature, I'm an awful gardener, and prefer faux plants.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lvB8rUyZG1o/XHgIQFuKoKI/AAAAAAADaQU/TQ7CVE8gLRkonVgKgEnxRgdfRa4YBwEswCLcBGAs/s1600/decoart%2Bchalky%2Bgesso%2Breview%2B4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="638" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lvB8rUyZG1o/XHgIQFuKoKI/AAAAAAADaQU/TQ7CVE8gLRkonVgKgEnxRgdfRa4YBwEswCLcBGAs/s640/decoart%2Bchalky%2Bgesso%2Breview%2B4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
For the Buddha head, I only needed 1 coat of the black Chalky Gesso, due to the great pigmentation. I was careful to not get any on the existing faux succulents. I used dark shades of Americana Acrylics to paint streaks of color, bringing out the details and texture of the Buddha head. Over that, I used Dazzling Metallics to further highlight the details and add some interest. I used <a href="https://shop.decoart.com/americana-decor-varnishes">Soft Touch Varnish</a> to seal the paints. I didn't want to lose the contrast of the matte and shine, and while it dulls the metallics a little, it still does a good job at achieving the effect I like. Plus it's a smooth finish.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-obz29vmqEek/XHgc7bPkAyI/AAAAAAADaQs/vqQ_9mnX0lkrOg1L7AELKL9djC0fHMh8gCLcBGAs/s1600/decoart%2Bchalky%2Bgesso%2Breview%2B5%2B%25281%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1426" data-original-width="1533" height="594" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-obz29vmqEek/XHgc7bPkAyI/AAAAAAADaQs/vqQ_9mnX0lkrOg1L7AELKL9djC0fHMh8gCLcBGAs/s640/decoart%2Bchalky%2Bgesso%2Breview%2B5%2B%25281%2529.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
A little gesso goes a long way. I was sent 16 fl oz jars, but it will still last me a while for small craft projects like these planters. If you're someone who does large craft or art projects, the 32 fl oz jar would be a good size for you. I have a few more repainting projects planned where the Chalky Gesso will come in handy. It's definitely nicer than regular gesso which can often have chunks, need to be watered down to go on smoothly, and needs sanding between coats. Total time saver for me! It will be a good staple in my painting supplies. Whatever you're making, have fun with it. I managed to finish a love themed project today! I wrote an informal tutorial over on my Instagram, like I do on occasion. This love and hearts sign is abstractly painted, which is a nice loose style that's about not being perfect. Great for people who just like painting, but aren't interested in always doing precise designs. You should try it. You can use any paint colors you like.<br />

</ul>
<br />
<b>INSTRUCTIONS:</b><br />
<b>1)</b> I used Americana Acrylics in 4 shades of each color group to paint the sign and hearts with painterly strokes.<br />
<br />
<b>2)</b> Over the hearts I used the glitter and metallic paints for little patterns. My daughter painted the 1st and last hearts. I added a little sparkle to those too. I find a thin liner brush is great for small details.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-heDR8nzaHJk/XGXQ9ozaYWI/AAAAAAADWMg/Aka9n1oyOnsaAR5VFyj2sgS9sjGVM5JKwCLcBGAs/s1600/love%2Band%2Bhearts%2Bsign%2Bcollage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-heDR8nzaHJk/XGXQ9ozaYWI/AAAAAAADWMg/Aka9n1oyOnsaAR5VFyj2sgS9sjGVM5JKwCLcBGAs/s640/love%2Band%2Bhearts%2Bsign%2Bcollage.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>3)</b> To assemble the pieces, I used baker's twine from Oriental Trading, with my favorite hot glue gun and sticks from AdTech. I laid out the and cut each baker's twine piece to fit between the sign and heart with an inch overlap on each end for glue. I attached each twine piece with hot glue, making sure to squirt some on top of the glued ends too for extra security.<br />
<br />
<b>4)</b> I cut a longer piece of bakers twine and hot glued it to the top of the "love" sign, so it could hang. Try to center this in the best way possible. This isn't a symmetrical project, so weighting it to hang straight is tricky.<br />
<br />
I find this multi-temp hot glue holds up pretty well for outdoor projects. Plus my porch is covered, so nothing is getting exposed to rain or snow. Definitely wind though, so I might paint the backs of the hearts if they spin a lot. Normally I would seal the wood after painting, but I'm not worried about humidity in February like I am in the summer.<br />
<br />
I hope you have a wonderful day. Do something nice for someone else or yourself. Everyone deserves love and love of one's self is something we all need to work on. I wanted cute bowls designated for only the cats. Instead of putting their names on them (cats can't read), I chose patterns.<br />

SUPPLIES:<br />
- 3 red ceramic bowls at Dollar Tree<br />
- Rubbing alcohol<br />
- Paper towel<br />
- White acrylic paint<br />
- Small paintbrush<br />
- Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe Gloss<br />
- Wide paintbrush<br />
<br />

<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zhNagpKxIiM/W5EpRR-2gQI/AAAAAAADUWs/WRnbM7tjbWUc9Yvvp22n86fcBYMdnTJ3ACLcBGAs/s1600/Picture_20180906_082345794.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="936" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zhNagpKxIiM/W5EpRR-2gQI/AAAAAAADUWs/WRnbM7tjbWUc9Yvvp22n86fcBYMdnTJ3ACLcBGAs/s640/Picture_20180906_082345794.jpg" width="374" /></a></div>
<br />
INSTRUCTIONS:<br />
1) Clean the bowls with a rubbing alcohol soaked paper towel. This removes dirt & oils.<br />
<br />
2) I used white acrylic paint & a small paintbrush to add a simple pattern to each bowl.<br />
<br />
3) After the paint dried, I carefully sealed the bowl with Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe Gloss and a wide paintbrush. I used a few coats of that product, letting each coat dry an hour before adding another.<br />
<br />
4) Then, I put them on top of the kitchen hutch to cure for a month (28 days). With our busy summer I forgot about them until today.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fp5-aagzYFI/W5Epj5BFuxI/AAAAAAADUW4/1uL5OPy8eYIdP3VKCN9kYtZjl7bFwVOeACLcBGAs/s1600/Picture_20180906_082456298.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1075" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fp5-aagzYFI/W5Epj5BFuxI/AAAAAAADUW4/1uL5OPy8eYIdP3VKCN9kYtZjl7bFwVOeACLcBGAs/s640/Picture_20180906_082456298.jpg" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
NOTE:<br />
The Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe Gloss allows for cured dishes to be washed on the top rack of the dishwasher, but you could hand wash items too. The key to making it work well is in using multiple thin layers, letting it the dishes fully cure before using them. If you don't follow the directions, the art will wear off quickly.<br />

CATS:<br />
Sophie (tuxedo) didn't want to cooperate, but Pippi (grey) and Darcy (tabby) were hungry enough to let me take photos. Sophie likes both cats, but the other two don't like each other much. They tolerate each other for meals and my attention.<br />
<br />
I've been writing tutorials on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/craftyladyabby/">my Instagram</a>. Sorry is the photos are wonky. I edited them on my phone with the PicMonkey app. The Blogger app is still awful, so I'm having to redo this post on my laptop, which isn't a huge deal. Head over to my Instagram to see behind the scenes photos of what I've been up to. If the Blogger app worked correctly, I'd cross-post those photos to here. I have a backup plan, so I'll try to post more often. I just have been really enjoying making things without always explaining how to make it, but I want to share those projects too in a "look what I made" sort of way. Whatever you're making, have fun with it. I'm still alive and making stuff. I'm taking a break from writing tutorials to renew my passion for making things. I know, I know, you all like the tutorials. I might get back into writing regular blog posts again. I might also share painting tips and what not over on my <a href="https://www.instagram.com/craftyladyabby/">Crafty Lady Abby Instagram</a>. I'm traveling more this summer, enjoying not having deadlines, and have been managing the social media for a dinner party company. If you head over to my Instagram, you will see lots of crafts, cats, and travel, in additional to photos of me making things. I actually do have a lot of things that I mean to write about, but keep putting off in favor of getting paint on my elbows for days. I just want to make things and not write lots of tutorials. Anyway, head to my Instagram. Darcy encourages you to get outside and soak up the sun. Happy travels and makery.<br />

While a lot of the work has been done by contractors, the design elements have been chosen by me. I've been working on some small projects that add flair to the retro style. One of those is this <a href="https://www.fairfieldworld.com/project/retro-style-oilcloth-stool-makeover/">Retro Style Oilcloth Stool Makeover</a> over on Fairfield World. I used a combination of products sent by <a href="https://www.fairfieldworld.com/">Fairfield World</a>, <a href="https://decoart.com/">DecoArt</a> and <a href="https://www.dritz.com/">Dritz</a> to give our old stools a much needed makeover. I've been wanting to use oilcloth for years, so I'm glad I found a way to incorporated it into our kitchen.<br />

They are a fan of sitting at the kitchen window watching wildlife...mostly squirrels...in our front yard. They also watch our neighbors and greet us excitedly at the windows. I might make a skinny bench by the front door too. I found this stool at AC Moore after several store searches. I tested it out for sturdiness before purchasing. Now, this doesn't mean I stood on it. I just checked the joints and levelness. Like with most of my artwork, I paint in layers. I like the contrast of colors and finishes, especially shiny and sparkles! You can alter the color palette to suit your decor. There are tons of <a href="https://decoart.com/products/">DecoArt paints</a> to bring your cat stool goals to fruition. The candy colors match my 50s diner inspired kitchen.<br />

<b><br /></b>
<b>INSTRUCTIONS:</b><br />
<b>1) </b>Use sandpaper to smooth any rough spots on the wood stool. Use a damp paper towel to remove any wood dust.<br />
<br />
<b>2)</b> With a wide paintbrush, basecoat the stool with 1-2 coats of Americana Acrylic Paint. Rinse and wash brushes between colors. Use the paper plate as a paint palette.<br />
<ul>
<li>Top - Ocean Blue</li>
<li>Outer Sides - Sour Apple</li>
<li>Inner Sides - Sea Aqua</li>
<li>Bridge (piece between two sides) - Carousel Pink</li>
<li>Edges - Purple Cow</li>
</ul>
<div>
<b>3)</b> Using a small flat paint brush and Bluegrass Green, add arched stripes to the outer sides. With Baby Pink and the same cleaned brush, add vertical stripes to the bridge. With Purple Passion Glamour Dust Paint and a round brush, add dots along the purple edging. None of these details need to perfect, as cats won't judge your art skills.</div>

<br /></div>
<div>
<b>4)</b> On the stool top, with a pencil, lightly draw a cat head shape. Write the words "CATS ONLY". Fill in the cat head with Sea Aqua and a medium width brush you like. With a small flat brush and Bahama Blue, paint the letters.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>5)</b> Paint 3-4 layers of DecoArt Dazzling Metallics Peacock Pearl on the cat head. Lightly draw cat eyes, nose, mouth and whiskers with the pencil. Using Bluegrass Green, fill in the facial features. With Sour Apple and a small paintbrush, add the iris to the cat eyes. Mix 1:1 DecoArt Glamour Dust Limelight and DecoArt Craft Twinkles Lime Green on a paper plate. Fill in the irises with a 2-3 coats of this glitter mixture. With Ocean Blue and a small paintbrush, add the eye pupils. Go over those pupils with DecoArt Dazzling Metallics Ice Blue. </div>

<b>6) </b>Mix 1:1 DecoArt Glamour Dust Ice Crystal and DecoArt Glamour Dust Crystal together on a paper plate. You'll need a large amount, but you can mix it in small batches as the ratio is the same. With a wide paintbrush, cover the whole stool (except the underside) with this glitter mixture. I use 2-3 coats for an extra glittery surface.<br />

I painted this stool for my cats, but it would be handy for a small dog or child too. I used the last glitter mixture as a glitter sealer, but DecoArt does have actual sealers. I just haven't used any of their shiny sealers yet. I have more painting projects planned, from small stuff like kitchen wall art to big stuff like outdoor furniture. If you want to see what I'm making before it becomes a tutorial (not all projects are tutorials), follow me on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/craftyladyabby/">Instagram</a>. Yes, our kitchen was remodeled, and like all remodels the stress was high. Since kitchen our colors and style are a pastel retro vibe, I wanted the worn out light switch cover to get a refresh too. This light switch cover was dirty and missing paint, so painting was an easy solution.<br />

<b>INSTRUCTIONS:</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>1) </b>With a wet and soapy paper towel, remove any dirt and oils from the light switch cover. I didn't take a photo of mine clean, but you can see how worn it was in this photo of one gesso layer.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jqhZv2z9yro/Wu2yCgQ2MPI/AAAAAAADKVs/yGPEr5OGM2MMKDYU-O5fsDWQ7fB4I2uXgCLcBGAs/s1600/Chili%2BPepper%2BLight%2BSwitch%2BCover%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="774" data-original-width="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jqhZv2z9yro/Wu2yCgQ2MPI/AAAAAAADKVs/yGPEr5OGM2MMKDYU-O5fsDWQ7fB4I2uXgCLcBGAs/s1600/Chili%2BPepper%2BLight%2BSwitch%2BCover%2B1.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>2)</b> Using a wide soft paintbrush, cover the light switch cover in 2-3 light layers of DecoArt Media Gesso, to prime the surface and hide previous colors. Let each layer fully dry before adding another layer. Thoroughly clean the brush using the cup of water and paper towels.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MVTKsRV4HSE/Wu2y_j2NZmI/AAAAAAADKV0/YPIkdmPaEEA9DSY_ERFror-2PYZjQeZiACLcBGAs/s1600/Chili%2BPepper%2BLight%2BSwitch%2BCover%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="773" data-original-width="500" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MVTKsRV4HSE/Wu2y_j2NZmI/AAAAAAADKV0/YPIkdmPaEEA9DSY_ERFror-2PYZjQeZiACLcBGAs/s1600/Chili%2BPepper%2BLight%2BSwitch%2BCover%2B2.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>3)</b> Squeeze a little DecoArt Americana Acrylic paint onto the paper plate. Using the paintbrushes and paint, fill in the chili sections. Yes, chilis do come in purple, but not pastel. It's whimsical people! The paint might need 2-3 layers for full opacity. Rinse the brushes out using the cup of water and paper towels.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MPrU1tRM-NY/Wu24fv2ORNI/AAAAAAADKWE/guaRAm1K4boRvDiDow8CokWwFQdP7lDYgCLcBGAs/s1600/Chili%2BPepper%2BLight%2BSwitch%2BCover%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="795" data-original-width="500" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MPrU1tRM-NY/Wu24fv2ORNI/AAAAAAADKWE/guaRAm1K4boRvDiDow8CokWwFQdP7lDYgCLcBGAs/s1600/Chili%2BPepper%2BLight%2BSwitch%2BCover%2B3.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>4)</b> Using the same dark shades of DecoArt Americana Acrylic paint, add patterns to the chili bodies.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<b>5)</b> Using the DecoArt Dazzling Metallics paints and a small paintbrush, paint over the chili stems. I mixed a little Tangelo Orange and Rose Gold together to get the orange metallic shade. You could mix Tangelo Orange and Dazzling Metallics Pearl for a pastel look, but I didn't want that light of a color.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mFlzrtUTre8/Wu27iyFay3I/AAAAAAADKWU/vy_PquLsWTAcfyWS4RDlEK3ZhbQZYh1QACLcBGAs/s1600/Chili%2BPepper%2BLight%2BSwitch%2BCover%2B4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="766" data-original-width="501" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mFlzrtUTre8/Wu27iyFay3I/AAAAAAADKWU/vy_PquLsWTAcfyWS4RDlEK3ZhbQZYh1QACLcBGAs/s1600/Chili%2BPepper%2BLight%2BSwitch%2BCover%2B4.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>6)</b> Mix DecoArt Craft Twinkles in Crystal and DecoArt Glamour Dust in Ice Crystal in a 1:1 ratio on a the paper plate. Cover the painted chilis in this glitter paint mixture. I use about 3-4 layers for a very sparkly look. Instead of mixing glitters that matched each section, I felt that an overall sparkle was easier and less detracting. After all of the layers are dry, screw the light switch cover back into place.<br />

I took a lot of photos during the kitchen and half bath remodel, so it's going to be some time before I write any posts about that experience. If you ever want to follow along with remodel and project making progress, check out my Instagram. I use Instagram Stories almost daily, and there's always lots of juicy behind the scenes action...and also many cat photos. Whatever you're making, have fun with it. Yes, this blog is still a thing that I'm doing. If I could blog from my phone, ya probably would get more content to enjoy. Instead, if you miss me, head over to my <a href="https://www.instagram.com/craftyladyabby/">Crafty Lady Abby Instagram</a>, especially my stories, for behind the scenes looks at my creative projects, wacky adventures, and cat trio. I will try to share a post about having my kitchen and half bath...but mostly the kitchen...being remodeled is like, with lots of photos of course.<br />
<br />
Anywho, over on <a href="https://www.fairfieldworld.com/">Fairfield World</a>, I created this <a href="https://www.fairfieldworld.com/project/metallic-celestial-tuffet-stool/">Metallic Celestial Tuffet Stool</a>. Y'all know I love painting, but the furniture makeover addiction is forming. For this project, I used a <a href="https://www.fairfieldworld.com/store/6/soft-support-foam-tuffet-kit/">Fairfield World Tuffet Kit</a> (comes with a foam round , batting, and a wood round) and <a href="https://www.fairfieldworld.com/store/bolt/oly-fun-10-yard-bolt-jet-black/">OlyFun</a>, <a href="https://www.dritz.com/quilting-sewing-supplies/mass-merchant/home-decor/upholstery-supplies/11750/">Dritz staples</a> and <a href="https://www.dritz.com/quilting-sewing-supplies/mass-merchant/home-decor/home-decor-tools/14334/">staple gun</a> (honestly my favorite easy to use staple gun), J<a href="https://www.dickblick.com/products/jacquard-lumiere-acrylics/">acquard lumiere paints</a>, black canvas and hairpin legs (bought 2nd hand on Ebay). Fairfield World and Dritz sent me the supplies for this project, and Fairfield World paid me of course. You could pick any colors and design you want. I really just wanted to share with you a no-sew way of making a tuffet stool. Also the Jacquard Lumiere paints come in a wide range of metallic colors that you need to try out. The layer of OlyFun on the bottom covers any sloppy stapling you did on the batting and canvas layer, but you'll want the OlyFun layer to be a tad neater. The hairpin legs require a drill, and I broke in my new impact drill (a Valentine's Day present from my hubby) on this project. Anyway, go make this project for your own home. I find it to be handy paired with an armchair for video game duels. I use the <a href="http://www.craftyladyabby.com/2016/05/home-decor-diy.html">Modern Canvas Ottoman</a> (another DIY project) with a different armchair.<br />

If you don't know, I have a fascination with space travel and our galaxy. I used <a href="http://www.shannonfabrics.com/">Shannon Fabrics</a> Cuddle Suede (a great vegan option) and <a href="https://www.fairfieldworld.com/">Fairfield World</a> Poly-Fil Fiber Fill for the pillow body. I chose a neutral color scheme for the hand painted orbit design. You could make it with accurate colors if desired.<br />

<li>Small paint brushes</li>
<li>Paper plate</li>
<li>Paper towel</li>
<li>Cup of water</li>
<li>Sewing machine</li>
<li>Straight pins</li>
<li>Hand sewing needle</li>
</ul>
<b>INSTRUCTIONS:</b><br />
<b>1) </b>Cut the piece of cuddle suede in half, along the middle fold, forming two rectangle panels.<br />
<br />
<b>2)</b> On one panel, using white chalk, draw out the orbit lines, sun and planets. I looked at a few different orbit designs to find one that would work for this pillow. This is definitely not accurate for how the planets actually orbit, or the planets would orbit into each other. Any errors can be erased with a wet cloth.<br />
<br />
<b>3)</b> Pour a little gold and silver paint onto the paper plate. Using small paint brushes, fill in the sun and planet shapes. I used images of the actual planets to pick which were gold (red toned planets and our sun) and silver (blue toned planets including our Earth). For the ring of Saturn, I mixed a little white into the gold paint on the plate, to lighten it. I used that color for our moon too. I asked my little family if I should add all of the moons, but they said no. Less is more to them, but you can decide if you want some comets and other moons too. I like the simplicity without stars, which leaves more cuddle suede exposed. With the white fabric paint and a flat paint brush, paint dashes along the orbit lines. Rinse the paintbrushes in the cup of water. Dry them with the paper towel. Let the paint dry completely before sewing.<br />

<b>4)</b> Load the sewing machine with matching grey thread. Lay the two panels together right sides facing. Sew around all 4 sides, leaving a 6" gap. Trim the corners at a diagonal, making sure not the cut through the stitching. Turn the pillowcase inside out, shaping the corners with your fingers or a chopstick.<br />

<b><br /></b>
<b>5) </b>Fill the pillow with stuffing. I start with the corners and edges, working towards the middle. Make sure to even out the stuffing, so there are no lumps.<br />

<br />
<b>6)</b> Turn in the edges of the gap to be even with the seam. Use straight pins to temporarily close the gap. Cut a long piece of grey thread. Put one end through the eye of the hand sewing needle. Line up the two thread ends and double knot them together. Using an invisible/ladder stitch, close up the gap with small even stitches. When the gap is closed, knot off the thread into the seam. Run the needle under the seam, and pull up a few inches away from the gap closure. Pull the thread to bring the last knot into the seam. Cut the excess thread.<br />

<br />
<b>7)</b> Give the pillow a hug to even out the stuffing and well because you deserve a hug after finishing every pillow.<br />
<br />
This pillow could be scaled to any size. I find that this size makes a great back pillow. You could even make the orbit accurate by using a ruler to space out the planets correctly. I recently bought a lot of metallic fabric paints (a different brand than I normally use) to try out on future projects. Speaking of space projects, I made a <a href="http://www.craftyladyabby.com/2018/02/home-decor-diy-painted-suede-jumbo-moon.html">Painted Suede Jumbo Moon Pillow</a> and a <a href="http://www.craftyladyabby.com/2017/02/home-diy-golden-moon-phases-garland.html">Golden Moon Phases Garland</a>. You should definitely check those out too. Whatever you're making, have fun with it. Happy Makery!Abby Davishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04324511684836415313noreply@blogger.com0
